Rosie violence and depression
So many people that receive violence from their parents growing up with the mentality that the abuse and violence is something normal, but I don't believe that is Rosie's case. She had a good hearth and i do believe that she did not hit the girl with purpose, thankfully in that moment she realize that she did not want to made the same mistakes of her mother or worst be like her. Moreover, that is why she fell into an instant depression because she regret it.
After she hit one of Millie's kids Rosie felt really bad because she already experienced it (violence) and she knew how painful and humiliating it was. It brought back her bad memories and that's why Rosie regret after she did it because she was acting just like her mom and she knew that's not the kind of person she wanted to be ( Rosie perfectly knew that she was better than a violent woman).
After hitting one of Millie's kid, Rosie felt terrible because it reminded her mother abusing her. Rosie never wants to be like her mother and abusing other children. In page, 207 Rosie stated what Tia had said "..I reacted that way because that was what I'd been taught, but that I didn't have to be like that." This can relate other children who had abuse relationship with their parents and had a impact on them But Rosie doesn't want that affecting her.
Page.206 feeling
I think it's a nice lesson that Tia taught to Rosie. Rosie learned how to treat other people. She never hit a child again. It briefly shows that how Tia changed Rosie's life. Rosie had a bad childhood but she still looking forward and being positive. This paragraph tells me that parent's behavior could really affect on children.
Page 206
From this scene, Rosie described where Titi was live and the environment and she felt regret because she pooped that kid's mouth. I think why she felt regret because she understood what would the kid feel and how scared she would. Roise's mother did this thing to her which gave her the childhood trauma, she felt like she became her mother and she fell into a depression wanted the child forgiveness, she was afraid becoming a person like her mother. Then Tia's word gave Roise a reason, she did not have to scared even though she was taught like that, she did not have to be like that, she would not become a person like her mother.
Thoughts on pg 206..
I think what Rosie is trying to show is how the kids are being raised is the cause for the the way they act, like little brats that don't listen. Just like her, she hit a kid once and regretted it and tia tells her she did this because the way she was raised. At the home she was abused for everything wrong she did. So basically teaching her when a kid does something wrong to hit them. Making her think this was the right thing to do. She felt so bad hitting the kid and after that she never hit a kid again. She knew though it was the way she was raised caused her to do this...
Thoughts on pages 206-207
My thoughts on this section is that Rosie had a feeling of regret because she had never hit a child before. Based on how she described how she hit the kid, her saying that her mouth had been bleeding, it made her feel bad. She only hit the child because of they way she had been raised, specifically, living in the home, being abused constantly, that's mainly how she knows how to handle children because that's the way she had been handled as a little girl growing up. She later learned, from her Tia, that she didn't have to react that way at least all the time but they both understood why she had reacted the way that she did.
Sometimes our actions go beyond that we really expect. In some situations we lost our control and we just release the pain or our bad mood that we carry inside, sometimes with people that we do not want to hurt. In this case Rosie lost her control and her actions was beyond. However, as she said how much she hates to be and act like that. She does not want to hurt anyone because she know what it feels. Also , her essence is to be a good person, and give the love that she wants to receive, help people and be like a butterfly.
What this scene is trying to convey is when Rosie Perez hit one of Millie's kids she was so satisfied as soon as she did it, but after she realized what she had done she knew it was a terrible thing which is why she was instantly reminded of what her mother used to do to her. I feel that as soon as she hit the girl, she pictured herself in her moms shoes hitting her(Rosie). And how the little girl must have felt.
what Rosie Perez was trying to convey.
i felt that Rosie Perez was trying to convey a feeling of regret. she felt bad that she accidentally hit one of Millie's kids off of pure instinct.since she was raised as a kid like that where she was hit if she disobeyed her mother, she used her experience ,and she didn't mean to do that
Rosie, Violence and Depression
Rosie felt bad at the fact that she hit one of Millie's kids. She understood that what she did was wrong, considering that she's an adult and who she hit is a child. She took her anger out the wrong way and reacted the same action she got. When Tia said that the reason why she reacted that way was because that was what she was taught and how she did not have to be like that, probably turned on a light bulb in Rosie's head. She probably is now thinking about her past and knowing that she is consuming everything that has always been a tradition or an on-going basis for her and haven't gotten a mind for herself. She is probably more aware of this and will most likely change the way she thinks and her ways.
In this particular scene in between chapter's 21-25, Rosie is trying to potray how life depicted in the environment she lives in. She gives readers subliminal messages through the use of slang such as 'kicked the shit' to describe how Titi cannot get off drugs. Her evironment also gives readers great detail in how several things that have affected her as a child, have a significant tole in her life.
Realization, depression, and regret
When Rosie hit one of Millie's kids she realized what she had done and only regret fell into her eyes wanting forgiveness, it gave her a realization on how her mother used to treat her whenever she had gotten smacked or beaten in abuse, especially on the influences she had while she was in the home since she was young. She knew she was taught that way at the home and in her mothers house as well, but she knew she was better than that, and not following these steps. She didn't want to become like her mother in a way so she knew what was best for her.
My thoughts
I thought Rosie reacted the way she did since that's how her mother would always treat her when she did something wrong along with Tia. If you grow up a certain way more than likely you'll act that way. Rosie felt shame and regret after hitting Millie's child this made her fall into a type of depression. Ever since that incident Rosie made a vow not to hit children again.
I think Rosie reacted the way she did because, even thought sometimes we don't like a behavior on someone, we end up doing the same thing anyways. Just like her tia said she reacted the way she did because that is what shes been taught. One knows is wrong but I believe she connects that type of behavior with a punch or slap.
Page 207
I think when she hit one of the kids; Rosie felt bad because she did not liked it when her mother used to hit her. Since she knew she hit that kids, from that moment she felt really bad as well as the feeling of regret surrounded her. She also confronted Tia about the incident which taught her that the choice is in her hands to react the same way she was brought up by her mother. Furthermore, Tia insisted her to not hit the kids again.
Maybe she react that way is because like she said that's what her mother should have done. At the home was the same they used to get paddle if they do something wrong. Her body get used to a that reaction since she used to get paddle a lot. She feel sorry because she knew how it feel like it. She went to all the struggle of getting hit.
english
My opinion of what Rosie perez is trying to convey is that she is becoming the person she was trying not to be over these years, All the abuse and neglect and pain she had felt from her childhood had made her become what she most feared. Also in the passage it say's this was what she had been taught and this is the truth and the saying (you are a product of your enviorment) is put into play and is perfect for this scenario.Rosie quickly knew what she had done and why she done it, And this was a life changing moemnt.... a enlightment of sorts and thus she vowed to never hit a child ever again.
I think that when Rosie hit Millie's kid it was just an instant reaction. You can tell that she was sorry and full or regret because she was begging for forgiveness. When she said she never hit a child ever again I think that she thought about the times her mother hit her and she didn't want to be that person. She wants to be a better person than her mother ever was.
Rosie, Violence, and Depression
I think this is an incredible moment in the book. It's a well-known fact that children who are abused grow up with the tendency to be abusers themselves. As Tia says, that's what she'd be taught by her mother. However, it also shows that we have free will, that we're not required to end up the way our parents trained us. It also shows that Rosie had a propensity toward depression. Depression has often been called "rage turned inward." Instead of lashing out at the world, she turned her anger in on herself which is why she ultimately had to go into counseling and on anti-depressants.
Rosies Regret
When Rosie hits the child, she immediately regrets what she has done. She had known what it felt like to be abused all her life. Whether it be by her mother, children at the home, other adults at the home, she was getting hit all the time. She knew the pain and so her Tia was understanding as to why she reacted like that. It was almost second nature, like a reflex because, that was all that Rosie had ever known. If you misbehaved, you would get hit. Rosie's Tia told her it didn't need to be that way, meaning she didn't need to discipline the child in that way. Rosie never hitting another child again is a good thing. Most people who are abused in their childhood, grow up to abuse others. However, thankfully Rosie did the complete opposite and never wanting to raise her hand to a child ever again.

2.Tia like Rosie's mother gives Rosie love and warm.
3. Because it's not easy to accept when your stepmother tries to change your mind. Rosie'a stepmother want Rosie forgets the past things and starts a new life. As a teenarger, I can understand Rosie.
4. Perseverance is easily found in Rosie misery experience. She has a terrible childhood but she never give up. She still forward the future. She tried to succeed and finally she did it. That is why perseverance could be the theme of the book

Chapters 21-25
while reading the recent chapters, I found it disgusting with the way Don treated Rosie. I felt as though it was even worst that he was her "idol". I liked that she didn't tolerate his disrespect and stood up for herself as a female. Rosie ended up throwing a two-piece KFC chicken lunch box which ended up hitting right on the forehead.

question about the book
The question that i have about the book is why it took her so long to come up with the idea of writing this book?
Friday, February 24, 2017
In the book when Rosie talked about when she was at her moms house I felt really bad for her. It was the time her mom wasn't there. Her brother was touching her and starting to molest her. I was scared I didn't know what was coming next. Thank god she was able to escape. And then when her mom found out she didn't believe her. Her mom was just telling her that why would he pick her out of her other sisters that are prettier. When I was reading this I was just thinking she is so young she doesn't deserve this life. No kid should have to go through what Rosie went through.

This week's blog entries
This week, since we're meeting in the Library, we won't be able to blog or discuss Handbook in class. However, I still want you to keep up w/ the reading and make entries on the blog. Some questions to consider as you read:
- Why is the trip to Puerto Rico important to Rosie?
- What roles do Tia and/or her father play in her life?
- Why is Rosie insulted when her stepmother serves her hamburgers and French fries?
- The theme for this year's Common Read is "perseverance." How is this book about perseverance so far?

Chapters 14-20
While reading chapters 14-20 my highlight was Rosie having Grace as a counselor and having her dog know as "Freckles". It shows that having a pet can complete a person, cheer them up and make them happier. Grace had a great personality as well she demanded the the best from the children by things such as their character, ability, and did it without fear or intimidation. I was disappointed when Grace decided to get married and left the " Group Home" for good. I thought Rosie and her shared a good bond.

Rosie Perez chpt 14-20
When I started reading chapter 14, I have felt like Rosie is getting close to father than her mom. At first she acted cold to her father, but same time she wanted care and be loved. Tia and Rosie went to Puerto Rico to see her father. In there, she felt that she became part of the family. Tia, Rosie, and her father's family spent time together that made Rosie forget about "Home" and her abusive mother. Maybe Rosie will end up with her father and Tia because both of them seem to show love for her.

I think the song "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" from Wizard of Oz made Rosie feel comfort when she was in pain. That song brought her hope and happy moments at this critical time. When Rosie awaken, she told the nurse about her dream that she was Dorothy from Wizard of Oz. This symbolize that song was escape from her pain and it replace with her happy moments.
I think the song "Somewhere over the rainbow" in Rosie's life symbolize happiness, love (hugs, kisses and company) peace(she could lie down and talk to someone without getting hit) and happiness (enjoy whatever she had without restriction) because in Tia's house had all of it and that's everything a child would like to have. Rosie's life in the home is like hell because she is a victim of violence and she is restrict from almost everything. She wish to have a normal life, like the summer that she spend at her Tia's house.
'Somewhere over the rainbow'
Rosie chose to use this song 'Somewhere over the Rainbow' which came from The Wizard of Oz because she wanted to think of an happy place. After her accident she started to sing this so she don't have to feel afraid or worried about anything, this song was actually helping her not to be scared and telling her "everything going to be alright". But that when she started to make fun of the nice nurse so she wouldn't have to think about the accident to much and the pain she was in as much
I think it is because she faint, dealt with the problems in that school so seemingly those thoughts and lines in that song were going on in her memories that is why she dream about it. Also because she related to that in terms of the pain she went through in her life. she felt loved by bother Bob which she needed in her life. She needed that kind of care and respect in her life because she did not have much of that.
somewhere over the rainbow.
The song maybe means that she wants to escape of her problems and go to a magical land. a land where it does not exist hate, sadness, a land that she could be happy. maybe ta scene try to show the readers that she wishes to have a different life.
Somewhere Over the Rainbow
After she got through the horrible accident, she described when she got up and began made fun with the nurse. The nurse sang 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow'to her everyday, the song is full of with hope, dreaming she can cross the rainbow like the bird and go somewhere without pain. I think why Perez told us this story is maybe inside of her like the song, she wants to live in a better world and she still hold the hope. She got the positive attitude to face the life but in nurse's eyes she is pathetic girl and felt sorry for what the world did to her.
Somewhere over the rainbow
" somewhere over the rainbow" really highlights Dorothy's life as a dark gloomy cloud, and somewhere out there there is a beautiful life awaiting her after she overcomes all her struggles. She is sure that it exists she just needs to find it. This relates to the memoir because Rosie Perez has had a life full of troubles, and she has hope in her that soon all the bad things will be over.
Somewhere Over The Rainbow. - Shani Simus
Shani Simus 2/14/17
In this particular scene of the women singing, "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" it seems as if the women is trying to overlook trouble by branching off into a alternate world where there will be no problems and that seemingly, everything that is bad will get better, because there is someone watching over you.. I think that the reason Rosie Perez uses this song in the specific chapter of the story, is to give readers insight on the empathy she is trying to convey about her accident and how the nurse was there by her side.

Somewhere Over the Rainbow
2/14/17
I believe the purpose of this scene in the book is to show there is always someone looking over you. Rosie dreams she was in the Wizard of Oz and when she wakes up it happens that the nurse sang to her "Somewhere Over the Rainbow". In this song it talks about dreams and babies crying and birds flying, so basically in my opinion the nurse is singing this to Rosie since she is injured and wants her to feel better. She was upset on how hurt Rosie was. Mainly the fact since she was from a home...
Somewhere Over the Rainbow
Dawn M. Carrero
The whole purpose of Rosie Perez mentioning the song, "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" is probably to let her readers know that there is somewhere or something that will make her happy and that will make her life better. Also, it may be to show the readers that there is a brighter side to things. No matter how bad something may seem at the moment or what a person is going through, things will get better or there is something greater/better waiting to happen. The song, "Somewhere Over the Rainbow", overall mentions how there is peace and greatness on the other side, which simply connects to a different life that will be filled with happiness. Rosie describes her accident in full detail which seems pretty bad and terrible. It is a sad moment and she is hurt. This represents the negative side of Rosie's life. When going back to the song, it describes about happiness, goals, paradise and just being a positive place.

Somewhere Over the Rainbow
I believe that Rosie Perez chose to include this part of the story in her book to show that she went through a lot being a child. So far in her book, Perez has been writing about her life and everything that she experienced as a child, I think this was probably one of her biggest experiences that she faced in her life and so she wants the audience to see what she went through and how it effected her in the long run. I believe that Rosie Perez didn't want to be pitied by her audience but she just wanted empathy from us because most of the things she went through were unbelievable because she went through them at such a young age.
Somewhere over the rainbow
She choose this specific scene from her previous stories to show what had happened to her during the incident, she felt loved in a way when Brother Bob came to her in a panic and went straight to the hospital after that, she got messed up badly but felt a love towards the people around her such as the nurse who sang her "Somewhere over the Rainbow"every night while she was unconscious for almost a week. The song was a form of an escape for her and the pain she went through from the "Home" and her life outside of that, it made her feel and gain joy/hope just by hearing that song. There was still somewhat of a guilt everyone had for just feeling bad for Rosie in the incident that had occurred.
Somewhere Over the Rainbow
The rainbow appears after the rain on those dark days, and it makes a new beginning with sun days. In my opinion she wrote this because it is a hope that she had , she was waiting that the sun days come and changed everything in her life. She dreamed with a beautiful place full of love, peace and happiness. This song was away to reflect her wishes in the place that she wants to be.
The Accident
This segment does a lot of things in the context of the memoir:
- It tells us, esp. non-Catholics, the difference between Brothers and Fathers.
- It tells us why the Brothers might have been nicer than the Nuns, b/c their lives were better (and still criticizes mean nuns).
- It sets the scene and location and routine.
- It gives us action. Shows the play and conflict between the girls.
- It describes in pretty gory detail the accident.
- It is moving b/c it shows how meaningful Brother Bob's compassion was to Rosie. Even though she's traumatized, she feels grateful for his love and care.
- It dramatizes, through dialogue, coming out of a several-day coma.
- I think "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" is appropriate thematically. She wanted to escape her terrible life to an "Oz."
Somewhere over the rainbow
When Rosie finally woke up, she says that she dreamed of The Wizard Of Oz. This was because, the nurse was singing "somewhere over the rainbow" to her while she was unconscious. The nurse felt sorry for her but, Rosie was uninterested and wanted to change the subject quickly. Rosie didnt remember this till years later.
somewhere over the rainbow
Rosie was not really happy with the life she was living because of mistreat where she was living because of mistreatment, and she gets into an accident where shes wounded pretty bad and was unconscious for a couple days and when she wakes up she talks about how she was in the wizard of oz and singing somewhere over the rainbow which really expresses how she feels because she wants to escape this life to a better one, she wants to live a better life, a place where she can live out her dreams.
Somewhere Over the Rainbow
The song Somewhere Over the Rainbow comes from the movie The Wizard of Oz. This song is talking about a place that over the rainbow. In that place, there is no pain, no worries and fill with hope. And the character Dorothy sings the song in the movie, she hopes that she can get to this place. I guess that she must has something worry about or feels unhappy. This song is contain the little girl's dream and wish. Relating to the book, Perez had a car accident, and she was asleep a long time. And he nurse keep singing the song to Perez everyday. Hope she can wake up.
somwhere over the rainbow
I think Rosie perez brought up the song from the wizard of oz called (somewhere over the rainbow) because she watched the wizard of oz in her youth and that she relates her experience to the song,She relates to it because she longed to get out of her acoma.

Rosie's Stories
This first part of the memoir shows Perez's many experiences w/ adults. She learns different things from different adults in her life. Can you point out two different stories in the book, one in which Rosie was taught something positive or treated w/ love and respect and one in which she was abused either physically or emotionally? Can you make some general comments about what these stories are telling us about Rosie and how they helped her become the person she is?

So far the book is meeting my expectations. It has a great start, and I really like the fact that she uses spanish throughout the book. As I was reading I came across the part where the nuns told her that the only language to be spoken there is English. They didn't allow her to speak Spanish because she is " one of God's children". That really captured my attention because I myself wasn't sure what that meant. I also noticed that Perez switches back and from the perspective of her adult self to when she was a child, although I enjoy this it can make it a little confusing at the same time.
Other questions about the reading...
Perez is writing about a time period when she was 4-6 years old. Some of the time, she writes from the perspective of her adult self, looking back, and sometimes, she writes from the perspective of a child w/ a child's naivete. Can you point out examples of each?
Why does Perez use Spanish in an English-language memoir? Why do the nuns demand that she speak English? Why do they refuse to call her Rosie?
Why did Sister Elizabeth-Claire get so angry when Rosie kicked her? (p. 35-36)
What place does popular culture (music, movies, etc.) play in the memoir so far?
What questions do you have?

Week 1 Blogpost
After reading the Syllabus the only think I have to say about that is it is very well defined because all the important due dates and assignment names are mentioned there which is very helpful. The only things we all have to do is just regularly check the syllabus to keep in check of every assignment's due date. Rosie Perez's autobiography seems powerful. She has it's ups and downs but she has this notion of optimistic attitude and moving forward after which I can say the book is going to be interesting.
Class Syllabus
After reading the class syllabus I liked that we all as students have the chance to improve our grade by visiting a mentor as well as you allowing us all rewrites. In my writing I often make mistakes this would help me to improve upon my writing. I look forward to this semester and I see it going well.

Today and all my week I was thinking about this blog, then I told to myself how interesting this idea is and helpful it could be . After reading some of my classmates's comments I realize that I'm not the only one who English is the second language and I'm not the only one who feel uncomfortable sometimes speaking the second language. Every day I remember this "the bigger the obstacle is , more glorious and bigger the triumph and the victory are". , won't given up. Open mind and good energy always. Also, I was surprised about the Rosie Perez' book , and there are some Puerto Rican words "Spanish words" some of them I know or I can understand, but I know that for some of my classmates it could be little hard, if somebody need help about this and I can help, I will be available.
thank all for you time.

Class Syllabus
After reading the syllabus my question about the course is:
Writings Assignments and Group Critique will be post to our class blog?
Reading and Writing are not my favorite subjects because english is not my first language and I'm not a confident person. However, Reading and Writing help me to keep my mind busy and I like it when I understand the topic or when the book has a connection with my personality. My goals for this semester are: Work hard, focused and participate in class, so this way I can get high skills in reading, writing, grammar and be a confident person as well.

Questions about syllabus and introduction.
First there is something that i would like to share.
One of my biggest obstacles is grammar because English is my second language, but i am very excited to start a new chapter in my life starting school.
After reading the syllabus these are some of the questions that i have about the course.
I was wondering if the course involve some information about time management techniques, if not I would appreciate if someone that is reading this could recommend me some advise. I also want to know if the reflexion that we have to write for the events in March have to be submitted in the blog or we have to hand them in?
Thank you for reading this.

Class Syllabus
Class Syllabus
It is my first semester, I am worried about writing an essay and if I can follow the academic courses. After reading the syllabus, I think it is a good way for us to improve the writing skills. And communicate with others who have the same problem in college which is also a good chance. And also I have one question about the course, what are we actually do in group critique?
Class Syllabus
After reading the syllabus a question that I have is why was Rosie Perez's book "Handbook for an unpredictable life" chosen as a required text? My first impression of the book would have to be that this is a book on how Rosie survived her intense childhood. My own mother has told me about Rosie Perez and how she is very famous in the puerto rican community. I think that this is going to be a very interesting autobiography.
Class Syllabus
After reading the syllabus I have 2 questions to ask about the course. During the time we have with you in class, will you be teaching us on improving how to take specific quotes from readings for these upcoming writing assignments the right way without it being plagiarized? Somewhat hard to explain but some of us at times don't even know if we quoted correctly, or didnt inform it for the person who actually said it or if we didn't cite the works the right way and later be taken for worse in failing the course. My last question, for upcoming quizzes will there be any notification on being prepared for them to study or will they just be out of no where?
Class Syllabus
After reading the syllabus these are the question I have about the course.Grade is very important to everyone I guess. And I found the grading rule in syllabus that A means Excellent overall. So my question is, if someone really try hard and participate the class as well, but still can't get a nice grade in exam or assignment. Is this possible to get a A?
There is another thing I want to ask. Can I really use my phone as the textbook or dictionary? I know the professor would misunderstand sometimes if I use my phone. So I want to ask right here instead of in class to avoid the unnecessary troubles.

Class Syllabus
After reading the syllabus these are the questions I have about the course, what are we going to do in Groups Critique? Is there some kind of project doing in group? Anyway during this semester I want to do better at my writing and improving each skills that I am lacking in. For my first semester I want to do well and stay confidence!
1st Week
As I stated on Tuesday, all posts this week will be for extra credit. Starting on Sunday, you'll be required to make AT LEAST two entries per week on the blog. This week, you may use this space to ask questions that have arisen since you've read the syllabus. You may also use this space to tell us something about yourself, your views on current events, pop culture, etc. If you wish, you may also talk about your first impressions of Rosie Perez's memoir.
