Years of Living Dangerously
This week we're going to watch a couple episodes of the first season of Years of Living Dangerously (2014) (the second season just finished last year). Joseph Romm, author of Climate Change: What Everyone Needs to Know, is the Chief Science Advisor for the series which won an Emmy for best documentary series in 2014. As you watch the show, I'd like you to ponder a few questions:

Climate change leads to violence because out there like in Bangladesh people are struggling to find water, in some regions the lack of water is too big that people fight with each other in order to get it. Climate change is a political issue because is something that is affecting all of us, and the world we live in. If those in power dont do something about it and try to change is harder for it to change. I believe the show uses celebrities to express that you dont need to be a climate expert to see what is going on and how is affecting people, also economy equility has a lot to do because in a scene shown in the movie they were talking about how trees help and make a location to be fresh, they were also talking about that the poor neighborhoods are the ones with not so many trees therefore they would be the ones to feel the heat even more, and then there is Bangladesh again. They are the ones that less helped for this problem to occur yet they would be the ones most affected by it because of their economy and their region.
ReplyDeleteIn the movie ( Years of living dangerously) Jospeh romm shows us the true nature of climate change and how it affects usand other around us. Climate change can lead to violence for a variety of reasons. The man reason is that with climate change the weather tends to become hottter/warmer and thus water tends to become scarce for many reasons including comsumption from humans and many other things. With scarcity of water many people tend to act crazy/irrational and tend to do things they would not normally do because they have to survive and the struggle to survive is what all humans have because it's in our nature to.
ReplyDeleteI think climate change has led to violence because things like water is diminishing as a result of heat waves, so people engage in fights to get the water in countries like Yemen. I think they choose actors and celebrities who are not climate scientists, because of their fan following, which brings more chances of majority of people actually watching the documentary and hopefully learn this issue. Science plays the role of making evidence based research on the effects and causes such as, investigation etc. Economic inequality plays the role of not taking safety measure for the workers, resulting in poorer quality at work and deaths.
ReplyDeleteDue to water being scarce and water being an essential for all humans. It causes a high demand for people. Especially in Yemen. The people in Yemen get their water from a well. They don't know when it will run out. Also in the country people with machine guns control the springs. I feel as though all of this happening in Yemen does show whats going to eventually happen to us. We all need to become aware of climate change also because of heat waves. Heat wave deaths are less noticeable by doctors but it causes a high number of deaths.
ReplyDeleteThe series use celebrities because they have a stronger voice within the public compared to someone who isn't famous. If the series use a celebrity it is easier for them to catch more attention which is better because they are trying to get as many people as they can to be aware of this issue. Celebrities through social media can raise awareness and get more people involved with this issue.
ReplyDeleteClimate change has led to violence because of the lack of water. Yemen could be the first country in the world to run out of water. In the documentary it was saying that people even shot each other so that they can get water. Climate change has also caused violence because of climate migration. People are being forced out of there land.
ReplyDeleteIn my home country Bangladesh suffer from crisis of climate change where people have to migrate to Dhaka to work. Climate change led people to poverty by the caused of terrible cyclone and rising water levels. People stuck working in dangerous factories and getting paid low, like around $2. However in Dhaka many people have to move to Dhaka for working purposes and send money to their family at home.
ReplyDeleteClimate change has led to violence in Bangladesh because poverty and scarcity of water. Climate change is raising sea level and it is affecting farms. A lot of migrated to Dhaka in a search of jobs. Also most of these people can't afford to buy water so they have to wait to get water from the tanks. People from two village are fighting each other for water to survive.
ReplyDeleteThe show uses famous celebrities as narrators to show and explain to people that it doesn't take to be a scientist in order to understand what is happening around the world and it's climate change. By using famous actors as their narrators it provides a way in luering many people with interest in the actor by watching their show and later becoming aware of what's really happening to our world before and till this day. It doesn't matter to which social class we belong to, we all in the end can be afected by climate change.
