I’d like you to spend some time reflecting this week on
the Common Read theme of perseverance in Handbook for an Unpredictable Life. Some questions to consider as we finish the
book:
- How did perseverance help Perez weather her experience in the orphanage?
- How do you define “success”? Referencing Handbook, what relation does perseverance have to success?
- In the Catholic Church, perseverance is the belief that God’s grace lasts to the end of a person’s life if she maintains her good works and faith. What is your sense of Perez’s faith? What good works has she done?
- How has your own thinking on the theme of perseverance changed over the course of reading this memoir?

ReplyDeletePerseverance and success, both are important in order to attain our goals. the first one, do not give up and face up the situations and obstacles in the way, keep going and remember the goals in you life. Also, working hard is important to be success and be persistent. When we combine all of these, the result of our actions is reflected in our success
ReplyDeleteI define success in this book as not giving up, and staying strong through everything life put Rosie to face. She remained kind. If I were in her shoes id probably be someone rude, and someone that would be feeling sorry for herself all the time, but she didn't do that. She stayed strong and overcome the pain. Her desire to move forward, and her story made her who she is today.
ReplyDeleteReading this memoir significantly changed how I viewed what perseverance is. This book taught me that perseverance isn't just achieving your goal. It's about the obstacles, and challenges that you tackle to get to that goal. Rosie's perseverance got her through her tough times even if others would quit.
ReplyDeletePerseverance has helped Perez in her experience at the orphanage because it has taught her valuable lessons inside of it, although she was in agony, had depression, confusion, lots of anger, frustration, etc. She had faith in herself that things would get better eventually by the help of her Tia and Father throughout the time.Deciding to take advantage of what she was given and better herself from it.
ReplyDeleteTo me success is achieving the goal one has set for themselves. Perseverance is an individual having the mindset that they will succeed at what they put their to as well as them working hard for what they want and not giving up. In the Book Rosie and Keenen both needed to find a "Fly girl" they traveled to different areas in search for the perfect girl. They kept finding girls but none was the perfect one they needed. Rosie then found Jennifer Lopez who was a perfect fit. Finding Jennifer and adding her to the group helped to make the group more successful.
ReplyDeleteI think there are a lot of scenes which show that Rosie Perez's sense of humor is tied to her perseverance. There's a great scene on p. 263 where Rosie tells a story of meeting record producer Rhonda Cowan. She says, "I know this motherfucker is not trying to tell me what to do! He better stay in his lane and shut the fuck up and buy me some new shoes...I can buy my own damn shoes, but you know what I'm saying. Motherfucker better act like he knows." Perez, no matter how dire or unpleasant her life is, seems to retain her sense of humor which is I think why she loved Crazy Cindy so much, b/c Cindy also maintained her sense of humor (though the system crushed her, maybe b/c she didn't have the love of family members like Rosie did w/ Tia and her father)
ReplyDeleteI define "success" as having determination, do hard work, take action for what your are passionate about, have patience, and faith. In the book, the relation that perseverance have to success is to survive hardships with faith and patience for a positive outcome. Rosie Perez in this case overcame her obstacles in which ever way she was faced with, with a optimistic nature and a sense for better future for herself. She never compromised on getting a better future in a sense of perseverance for it.
ReplyDeleteHow has your own thinking on the theme of perserverance changed over the course of reading this memoir? My own thinking has changed over the course of reading this memoir because it made me realize that Preservaerance isn't just a thing you do automatically but overnight.Roisie interpation of preserverance was that of overcoming obstacles and living it big .
ReplyDeleteSuccess is when you accomplish something you have always wanted to do. In the handbook Rosie Perez is successful because she went through a rough childhood but was able to get out. She was also successful when she got out of the group home and started choreographing.
ReplyDeleteI would define success as a big accomplishment and an aim someone or something is actually working hard to get. Like in "Handbook for an unpredictable Life" perseverance relates to success for the simple fact Rosie Perez went through a lot in her life and nothing stopped her to aiming to where she wanted to be and do..
ReplyDeletePerseverance helped Rosie throughout her time in the orphanage because she overcame a lot of challenges to become successful and even though she was depressed, she managed to overcome those obstacles and not let them change her.
ReplyDeleteSuccess is when you take all the obstacles coming your way and overcome them. You let your challenges make you a stronger person and not let them bring you down, but give you the strength to be who you want to be. When you persevere you demonstrate how powerful you are to successed.
ReplyDeletePerseverance help Rosie to not give up her dreams while she was suffering from depression. She know if she give up, her goals won't become true. All of her sufferings became part of her at the end, but Rosie tries hard to cope it and continuing what she is doing.
ReplyDelete- I believe that perseverance helped Perez weather her experience in the orphanage by exposed to many different new routines and lifestyles. When she first got to the home, things were different and she was confused. She got her first beating there, met a lot of new/different people, and she went through any obstacles getting use to the way the nuns did things in the home, she had to adapt to a new living.
ReplyDelete- I would say that the relation between success and perseverance is that once a person fully gets through a challenging situation that would be them persevering through it and by them doing so thats them being successful at that point
-Perseverance helped Perez weather her experience in the orphanage by giving many of the orphans Perseverance helped Perez weather her experience in the orphanage by giving many of the orphans determination to face their problems and fight through any struggles opposing them in their lives. Perseverance is the motive of having determination to do something for the benefit of oneself, or for others. The reason why Perez's perseverance is so significant to the theme of the story, is because it helps gives readers more insight on her empathy for others she wishes to help. I think that Perez chose to do this, because she came to a realization that there were others in orphanges that have faced and are going through similar problems not so much different to her's when she was a child, and she wishes to help them, out of good will.
ReplyDeletePerseverance help Rosie to accomplish her goals and overcome all those obstacles she had in life. She learned a lot how to deal with difficult people like her mom and siblings and situations like the home and she was grateful with it.
ReplyDeleteHow do I define success, is threw determination. I say determination because success is to get threw the struggle to become a better person at what you do. Dont try to cheat your way threw, take it slow. Go threw a process. If you see an opportunity take it but be careful on the different kind of opportunity because some opportunities are major set back if you cant keep up with it.
ReplyDeleteRosie Perez has a miserable childhood, but she never give up. I think the abuse she experienced made her become Rosie Perez, her beautiful personality and strong will helped her walked into a better life. I think perseverance changed over the course means even though you have a terrible life, you keep trying to get away from it, you will change your life and become a better person.
ReplyDeleteSuccess is when you accomplish your dreams and goals. In handbook Rosie succeed because she was strong and had perseverance to overcome the obstacles she had in life. Perseverance is the ability to keep on your commitments to achieve your goals. It is related to success because it gives you motivation to refocus on your goals again and again, until you become a successful person.
