Welcome to the blog for Prof. John Talbird's English 101 class. The purpose of this site is two-fold: 1) to continue the conversations we start in class (or to start conversations before we get to class) and 2) to practice our writing/reading on a weekly basis in an informal forum.
In Ch. 3, Romm goes through many projected climate impacts that we will/may face if climate change continues unchecked ("business-as-usual"). What is one thing that you learned about climate change in Ch. 3? What is one thing that alarms you?
One thing I learned about was the thawing of the permafrost and what that means to us. Not only will that release a ton of methane into the atmosphere which will exacerbate climate change, but I've read recently in another document that it's currently polluting a lot of rivers downstream of the permafrost:
Although the science is still tentative about what the permafrost thawing means, there are real-life measurable things we can point to that are happening.
What alarms me most about this section is that a lot of climate change seems to be self-regulating which means that there is a no-return point (which maybe we've passed). As Romm says, we can't just wait until things are so crappy that we can't stand it and THEN deal w/ it. If we do, it will be too late to fix. That's scary, esp. w/ the Trump Admin wanting to deregulate EPA and leave the Paris climate agreement.
Something I learned in Chapter 3 is that climate change has health impacts on us as humans more than I've thought. Some things include changing patterns of infections and insect-borne diseases, with this there has been increased deaths due to heat waves. Many tropical diseases are tropical because their insect or animal host prefer warmer climates. One thing that alarms me is that it is projected that they'll be an increase of wildfires in the United states. Wild fires contain many types of particles that significantly reduce the air. This wouldn't be good for our environment and will cause health problems as well.
One thing that i have learn from ch 3 is how does global warming affect human productivity, specially for those who work outside. The temperature could be in 90F but they would feel it in the 100F. Also would affect on labor productive.
One thing I learned is that the the Arctic is warming way faster than predicted. this alarms me because there is nit many people doing something about it. Especially our president. USA is a a country in which everyone look up to, and the fact the president of this country doesn't believe climate change is a thing or should be something to worry about, scares me because there might be other countries to believe the same. Everything Joseph Romm is telling us in his book is so alarming and honestly keeps me awake at night, even if that sounds ridiculous, because in some point I want to have kids, and I dont want them to live in a world in which they cant see animals everywhere, and everyone has some sort of disease.
One thing I learned about climate change is that is impacts biodiversity. Biodiversity measures the variety of life on planet earth. Because climate change affected biodiversity there is a higher rate of species extinctions. One thing that worries me is that there is much more extreme weather. If the weather keeps getting worse it can affect our health.
One thing I learned in chapter 3 that alarms me is the "equilibrium climate sensitivity" which means that it is causing the melting of the sea ice and also increasing the water vapor in the air. This alarms me because studies show that the water vapor is strong.
In Chapter 3, Romm listed some impacts that might happen in future. From this chapter, something I have learned that climate change will leave a huge impact agriculture and it can leave to with no crops. Like what Romm stated in page 74 , "..with large areas of cropland becoming unsuitable for cultivation, and declining agriculture". I find that without agriculture, that can affect our harvest of foods and without foods resources business will decreases.
In chapter 3, Romm discussed the destruction of the adverse effects of climate change can cause, along with it's impacts that scientist have predicted. Impacts included of sea level rise, super storms, human caused global warming, and droughts. All these changes in the climate will increase in the future if the human activity in producing green house gases and fossil fuel usage won't decrease. They also have positive and negative feedbacks which works like a catalyst to the global warming making warming and heating faster than it already is; negative feedback are really slow which absorb the heat making the global warming less severe. The amount of Carbon Dioxide emitted in our atmosphere is a lot more than what the negative feedback could absorb so it really alarms me because if human activity would not decrease than our nature won't also be able to help decrease the impacts of global climate change.
In charter 3 Room listed some impacts that we may face if Climate Change continue. One of them is the greenhouse gas effect. It is rising the temperatures ant it would affect the economy resources as land and ocean. The greenhouse effect is making the atmosphere even more sensitive. The greenhouse effect is one thing that alarms me because this gas would cause super-storms more destructive and we can end up under the sea.
In chapter 3, i learned one thing. Methane is 34 times more potent at trapping heat as carbon dioxide over a 100-year time horizon, but it is 8t times as potent over 20 years. Some 500 million metric tons of methane are mitted each year from natural and human sources, so it even a small fraction of the 70 billion tones of methane in the Siberian bogs escapes, it will swamp those emissions and dramatically accelerate global warming.
