My opinion  of what Rosie perez is trying to convey is that she is becoming the person she was trying not to be over these years, All the abuse and neglect and pain she had felt from her childhood had made her become what she most feared. Also in the passage it say's this was what she had been taught and this is the truth and the saying (you are a product of your enviorment) is put into play and is perfect for this scenario.Rosie quickly knew what she had done and why she done it, And this was a life changing moemnt.... a enlightment of sorts and thus she vowed to never hit a child ever again.
