What this scene is trying to convey is when Rosie Perez hit one of Millie's kids she was so satisfied as soon as she did it, but after she realized what she had done she knew it was a terrible thing which is why she was instantly reminded of what her mother used to do to her. I feel that as soon as she hit the girl, she pictured herself in her moms shoes hitting her(Rosie). And how the little girl must have felt.
