So far the book is meeting my expectations. It has a great start, and I really like the fact that she uses spanish throughout the book. As I was reading I came across the part where the nuns told her that the only language to be spoken there is English. They didn't allow her to speak Spanish because she is " one of God's children". That really captured my attention because I myself wasn't sure what that meant. I also noticed that Perez switches back and from the perspective of her adult self to when she was a child, although I enjoy this it can make it a little confusing at the same time.

Good observations, Yessenia. What do you (or anyone else) think it means to only speak English b/c she is "one of God's children"? Are Spanish-speakers not God's children?
