I think that when Rosie hit Millie's kid it was just an instant reaction. You can tell that she was sorry and full or regret because she was begging for forgiveness. When she said she never hit a child ever again I think that she thought about the times her mother hit her and she didn't want to be that person. She wants to be a better person than her mother ever was.
