The whole purpose of Rosie Perez mentioning the song, "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" is probably to let her readers know that there is somewhere or something that will make her happy and that will make her life better. Also, it may be to show the readers that there is a brighter side to things. No matter how bad something may seem at the moment or what a person is going through, things will get better or there is something greater/better waiting to happen. The song, "Somewhere Over the Rainbow", overall mentions how there is peace and greatness on the other side, which simply connects to a different life that will be filled with happiness. Rosie describes her accident in full detail which seems pretty bad and terrible. It is a sad moment and she is hurt. This represents the negative side of Rosie's life. When going back to the song, it describes about happiness, goals, paradise and just being a positive place.
